Training Courses
The following pre-conference courses will be
offered on Wednesday, May 16 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM concurrently:
Life Skills
for Telecommunicators
Instructor: Tonya Pearce, ENP
The transition into a career in emergency services
can sometimes seem like you have entered an alternate universe. Suddenly the
rules have changed. Instead of being encouraged to express yourself in new and
creative ways and embracing your individuality, you are required to conform to
a structure that is a completely foreign concept. The agency that you have
joined has likely been well trained to understand the dynamics and traits of
your generation. However, many of you were never taught what to do in a world
that understands why you function the way you do but has not changed to
accommodate these traits.
This course is designed to offer you an
understanding of this new frontier. We will be examining topics ranging from
interacting with co-workers to balance in, and maintenance of, your personal
life. Some would say these are things all adults should know. While this may
have been true in the past, it becomes increasingly evident that the rules have
changed. This course is designed to help you as a new telecommunicator
not only survive but also excel in your career.
Next Gen
Employees for the Next Gen PSAP
Instructor: Jim Lake, ENP
9-1-1 is evolving and so is the makeup of
communications center workforce. As PSAPs prepare for next generation
technology, they must also prepare for next generation telecommunicators.
Although the ability to utilize cell phones, text messaging, and the internet
have created a new breed of worker who is comfortable with technology,
challenges may arise when trying to communicate with these Generation Y-ers (born 1981-2000).
By preparing for them and the Millenials
(born after 2000), we can determine how they will affect the inter-employee
dynamic within the PSAP. By learning about the work ethics, motivations, and
values held by the younger generations, PSAP managers can engender better
communications, improve morale, and create a new generation of leaders. Through
attending this course, 9-1-1 professionals – from the manager to the telecommunicator – will obtain a better understanding of
their co-workers and learn to promote better social dynamics in the PSAP.

Each individual (or
PSAP if you choose to book all at once) will book your own room(s) which will need

ended with the Spring 2011 NENA/APCO Conference. You
are now under the Virginia E911 Services Board's PSAP Educational Grant
program. In order to have received grant funds for the Spring
2012 conference, your PSAP had to have applied and been approved for a grant in
the FY12 grant cycle. If you are using this program, your PSAP will pay for
your hotel accommodations and conference registration up front. Within 30 days of the closing of the
conference, your PSAP will submit receipts to VITA for reimbursement to the
PSAP for approved expenses. If the
receipts are not submitted within those 30 days, by state travel regulations,
your PSAP will not be reimbursed!!
Please, if you
need to cancel any rooms at the Holiday
Inn® & Suites - North Beach, call Denice Marrs at (804) 469-5395 and let her cancel the rooms for
you. She may be able to offer your canceled room(s) to another person or
agency needing a room(s). If
you need rooms after the cutoff date, again, call Denice to see if she has any
cancellations before making reservations at another hotel or paying the
higher non-conference rate.
