The Nelson County Board of Supervisors is seeking interested and qualified applicants for the following position:


Position:  Information Systems Specialist (Full-Time/Non-Exempt)


Salary Range:  $43,399 - $50,171 (Excellent Benefit Package Included)

Nelson County is seeking a qualified candidate to join the Information Systems Department as a full-time Information Systems Specialist focusing on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS Specialist assists with data collection, entry, and mapping activities in order to maintain accurate GIS data for the County, performs specialized technical work in preparation and maintenance of maps and related tasks within the County’s Geographic Information System (GIS) and works to advance GIS solutions to meet department needs. Duties include but are not limited to:


• Maintains and updates a wide variety of GIS layers and maps;


• Provides GPS and field support, which may include troubleshooting and resolving problems;


• Provides IT network, telecommunications, and user support;


• Produces standard or custom maps, charts, graphs, GIS analysis and projects, and related information;


• Organizes and maintains filing systems for mapping and related records;


• Assists with various projects to improve department or program efficiency;


• Remains knowledgeable about emerging GIS technologies and industry developments;


• Assigns new addresses and updates existing addresses to comply with 911 requirements.


The successful candidate will have strong computer skills and working knowledge of various software (i.e., Microsoft Office, databases, GIS, AutoCAD); the ability to report information in a clear and concise format, and the ability to be organized and efficient. Candidates with a four-year college degree in a related field preferred.

Communications Officer


Applications are being accepted for the position of Communications Officer with New River Valley 911 Authority.  Performs responsible technical work ensuring the prompt answer of incoming emergency and non-emergency requests for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services and for the timely and efficient dispatch of the appropriate responders.  Monitors a variety of frequencies and serves as a vital communication link to the units deployed. Performs other duties as assigned.


Candidate should have a combination of education and experience that includes graduation from high school or possession of a GED and work experience involving public contact, preferably with an emergency response agency. Special Requirements: Completion of appropriate training and certifications prescribed by the Commonwealth of Virginia for this level of position.  Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or ability to possess within 30 days.


Qualified applicants will be contacted to participate in a skills assessment test; only applicants who are tested and meet the minimum score requirements will be contacted and interviewed.


Starting salary range is $28,560 - $31,416 with excellent benefits.  Open Until Filled.

Position: E-911 Telecommunicator Trainee
Organization: City of Roanoke
Job Description: Dispatches police, fire, and rescue and public works equipment and personnel usually in response to emergency situations and disseminates information to the general public and emergency services. Receives and disseminates information thru the use of computers linked to the Virginia Criminal Information Network. Employees are hired in a "trainee" capacity with promotion after one year. Fast paced environment where attention to detail and the ability to multitask are a must. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferably supplemented with some work experience with Police and/or Fire and Rescue; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must become certified to operate the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Must pass police security clearance. Must undergo psychological screening and health screening. Must pass criminal history screening. Bilingual, Spanish/English speakers encouraged to apply. THIS POSITION REQUIRES 12 HOUR ROTATING SHIFTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS. Salary for position starts at ~$29,264 and increases to ~$32,339 after successful completion of the 1 year training/probationary period.
