Spring NENA/APCO Conference Postponed

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic and Governor Northam’s and the City of Virginia Beach’s recent bans of large gatherings, the Conference Committee has made the painful decision to postpone this year’s Spring NENA/APCO Conference.   As you can imagine we do not take this difficult decision lightly, but it was one we had to make for the safety of our community.    After speaking with the hotel, we have moved the conference to July 22-24, 2020.   The hotel has assured us they will continue to honor the state per diem rate as if the conference were still happening in May, as well as the other stipulations of our contract.   You should be receiving or may have already received a cancellation notice of your current room reservation – if you have not received said notice by the close of business on Wednesday March 18, you may wish to reach out to the hotel directly.

We are aware that this will require some logistics to pull off the conference.  We know that many jurisdictions utilize PEPP grant funding to send personnel to the conference—I have been in contact with Dr. Spears-Dean about this issue, and while we do not yet have an answer as to how postponing the conference will affect those jurisdictions rest assured that I am working with the VITA ISP as best as we can within state statutes.  More information regarding this will be forthcoming in the next month.

If you have already registered for the conference, your registration and payment will carry through to July.  If you or your jurisdiction have an issue with any current registrations that have already been paid for, please email and we will work through these matters.  If you have submitted a presentation during the Call for Papers, the chair of our Education Committee will be reaching out to you to verify that you are able to conduct your session during the revised conference dates.

We will get through these trying times together, just as we always do as first responders for the sake of our communities.  The Virginia NENA and APCO Executive Boards and the Conference Committee want to put together the best possible conference for our members.  We appreciate everyone’s support and look forward to our continued partnerships throughout the Commonwealth.  Please remain vigilant and safe.

Warmest regards,

Jason Malloy, ENP, RPL
